Oscar winner Charlize Theron is teaming up with Barbara and Andy Muschietti (It) to bring The Final Girl Support Group to television via HBO Max. Based on the New York Times bestseller by Grady Hendrix of the same name, the TV series will be set in Los Angeles and follows a support group for six final girls (women who have survived mass murders), who’s life experiences inspired the slasher film franchise of the ’80s and ’90s. The novel was just released on July 13th of this year by Random House/Berkley.
Andy Muschietti is slated to direct the pilot, while Theron, AJ Dix, Beth Kono, and Andrew Haas will serve as executive producers.
Hendrix’s previous publication, Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, was purchased by Amazon Studios after a ten-buyer bidding war. The series is currently in development.
