Via his new Facebook page, comic book legend George Perez announced that he has Stage 3 pancreatic cancer, which is inoperable. His grim diagnosis indicates that his life expectancy is only between 6 months to a year at this time. Perez was given the option of undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation, but is opting to spend his remaining days celebrating his life instead of having them be consumed by doctor visits and hospital stays. In a press release published today, which can be read here, he stated:
“…I’ve opted to just let nature take its course and I will enjoy whatever time I have left as fully as possibly with my beautiful wife of over 40 years, my family, friends, and my fans.”
George Perez is known as one of the comic book greats, with a career spanning decades of providing the artwork for iconic heroes like the Avengers, Wonder Woman, and Teen Titans. Perez formally announced his retirement in 2019, following complications from his battle with diabetes. He is hoping to be able to make one final public appearance as appreciation for the support he has received. Fans and fellow comic book creatives alike have already taken to social media to pay tribute to one of the greatest comic book artists of all time.
