One of Hollywood’s most award-winning queer films is returning to movie screens this summer to honor it’s 20th anniversary. Brokeback Mountain, starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by Ang Lee, will be back in theaters for Pride Month, with special showings slated for June 22nd and 25th. The film’s production company, Focus Features, states that there will be additional merchandise and initiatives associated with the anniversary, as well.
Brokeback Mountain tells the story of Ennis (Ledger) and Jack (Gyllenhaal), two ranch workers who fall in love over the summer of 1963 and follows the ups and downs of their story over the years. Based on the short story by Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Proulx, the groundbreaking Brokeback Mountain is known for being the first “mainstream” movie to be centered around the love story between two men. The star-studded cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, Anna Faris, Kate Mara, and David Harbour.
The film went on to win three Academy Awards, including Best Director for Lee, Best Original Score, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Brokeback Mountain received three acting nominations, with Ledger up for Best Actor, Gyllenhaal for Best Supporting Actor, and a Supporting Actress nom for Williams. In 2005, the movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival to critical-acclaim and went on to earn $178 million at the global box office.
